Master of
Business Administration- MBA Semester 3
MI0035-Computer
Networks
(Book ID:
B1973)
Assignment (60 Marks)
Note: Answer
all questions must be written within 300 to 400 words each. Each Question
carries 10 marks 6 X 10=60
Q1. Explain the concept of computer networks. Briefly
explain the different types of networks.
Concept of
computer networks - 6
Types of
computer networks - 4
Answer. In a general sense “network” refers to a group of objects,
individuals connected to each other. Similarly a cluster of interconnected
computers that communicate with one another through a shared communication link
for data exchange is known as a computer network.
A computer
network requires two or more individual computers having some data to share.
The individual computers must be connected through a physical pathway called
the transmission medium. All the
Q2.
Write a brief note on seven layered OSI reference model. Explain the role of
each layer.
Define seven layered OSI reference model - 3
Explain the role of 7 layers - 7
Answer.
The OSI reference model emerged as a first step towards
international standardisation of the protocols used in the various layers by
the ISO. The model is called the ISO OSI reference model as it deals with
connecting open systems, that is, systems open for communication with other
systems. An open system is a set of rules that is used for communication of two
different systems (the difference is in their
Q3. Write short notes on the
following:
a. Subnet
b. Super netting
c. Subnet masks
d. Dynamic NAT
e. Domain Name System
Answer. a. Subnets
A network
that exists within the Class A, B, or C network is called a subnet. It can also
be defined as a network within a network. Subnets are created to extend network
IDs by using host bits of one or more Class A, B, or C. Therefore, subnets can
have a network ID of any length. All devices that have IP addresses with same
prefix are defined as subnets. These are connected to the Internet by using the
same shared network.
Q4. What is Dense Wavelength Division
Multiplexing (DWDM)? What are the pros and cons of DWDM?
Concept of
DWDM
Four pros of
DWDM
Four cons of
DWDM
Answer. DWDM: This refers to a technique that
enables more than one wavelength to be added to a single-mode fiber to increase
the capacity of the transmission path by a factor equal to the number of
wavelengths added.
Pros and Cons of DWDM
Apart from
Q5. Explain the working of Carrier
Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) Protocol.
Working of
CSMA/CD in a Flowchart
Explain the
working in detail
Answer. The CSMA/CD protocol can be compared
with a typical life scenario such as a group discussion during an interview.
Suppose several candidates are sitting around the table. Every candidate must
listen to the instruction for a while before speaking (Carrier Sense). After
listening to the instruction, during a pause every candidate has an equal
chance to participate in group discussion (Multiple Access). In the case
Q6. Briefly explain the functions of
network management model.
Answer. Functions of network management
model:
Fault Management
The main aim
of fault management is to identify the network problems and notify it to the
users. The fault management system, if possible, automatically fixes network
problems. Fault management is the most widely implemented function of the
network management system because faults frequently occur in a network. These
