Q1. Explain the four basic varieties of layouts for manufacturing facilities.
Answer. PROCESS LAYOUT
It involves grouping together like machines in one department based upon their operational characteristics. E.g.. Machines performing drilling operations are installed in the drilling dept, machines performing casting operations are grouped in casting dept, and so on..Machines in each dept attend to any product that is taken to them. These machines are therefore called as ‘General purpose machines’.

Q2. The major decision areas in supply chain management have both strategic and operational elements . Explain these decision areas in detail.
Answer. Supply chain management operates at three levels; strategic, tactical and operational. At the strategic level, company management makes high level strategic supply chain decisions that are relevant to whole organization. The decisions that are made with regards to the supply chain should reflect the overall corporate strategy that the organization is following.
The strategic supply chain processes that management has to decide upon will cover the breadth of the supply chain. These include product development, customers, manufacturing, vendors and logistics.

Q3. Business process is a total response that a business undertakes utilizing the resources and delivering the outputs that create a value for the customer. Business process modeling refers to a set of activities undertaken to optimize the business process. Business process modeling can be categorized into two parts – Logical processing modeling and physical process modeling. Explain in detail of the two processes of modeling.
Answer. Logical Process Modeling is the representation of a business process, detailing all the activities in the process from gathering the initial data to reaching the desired outcome. These are the kinds of activities described in a logical process model:
Ø  Gathering the data to be acted upon
Ø  Controlling access to the data during the process execution
Ø  Determining which work task in the process should be accomplished next
Ø  Delivering the appropriate subset of the data to the corresponding work task
Ø  Assuring that all necessary data exists and all required actions have been performed at

In the recent times, operations are considered from end to end of value chain which means the operations that start from sourcing of materials and other inputs to successful delivery of products to customers or end users. Implementation is the process of executing the planned operations. When planning and controlling functions are put together, we call it as Implementation of Operations. Tools for implementation are a set of specialized techniques which can be standardized for ease of Write a brief note on “implementation of operations” and tools for implementation.
Answer. Planning - The first of the managerial functions is planning. In this step the manager will create a detailed action plan aimed at some organizational goal. Planning is an ongoing step and can be highly specialized based on organizational goals, division goals, departmental goals, and team goals.
Controlling - Controlling is the final function of management. Once a plan has been carried out the manager evaluates the results against the goals. If a goal is not being met, the manager must also take any necessary corrective actions to continue to work towards that goal.

Q5. It is possible to work according to the project plan only by careful monitoring of the project progress. There are various steps involved in monitoring and controlling a project from start to end. One of the steps is progress control of a project which can be achieved by completing certain steps. Explain the steps of progress control.
Answer. The various steps involved in monitoring and controlling a project from start to end are as follows:
Preliminary work- the team members understand the project plans, project stage schedule, progress controls, tracking schedules, summary of the stage cost and related worksheets. All the members have to understand the tolerances in any change and maintain a change control log. They must realize the need and importance of quality for which they have to follow strictly a quality review schedule and frequently discuss on the quality agendas. They must understand the stage status reports, stage end reports, stage end approval reports.

Q6. Value analysis is a methodology by which we try to minimize the cost and improve the revenue of a product or an operation. Value analysis looks at the manufacturing activities with a view to make the components simpler, processes faster, and the products better. Explain the process of value analysis.
Answer. A strategy that businesses use to determine whether all of their operational expenses are necessary and if they could be operating more efficiently. Process value analysis looks at what the customer wants and then asks if each aspect of operations is necessary to achieve that result. The goal of process value analysis is to eliminate unnecessary expenses incurred in the process of creating a good or service without sacrificing customer satisfaction.
